Canada Summer Jobs 2020: Approvals Now Available

Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) approvals are now available online.

Charities and churches should have received notification about their approvals or denials now that the government has released its list of 2020 recipients to the public.

Last year faith-based organizations seemed to have less difficulty securing CSJ funds than in 2018 (although this is certainly not universal).

While the 2020 application did not change drastically from last year’s, we noted four differences, most of which centered around the existence of “safe, inclusive and healthy work environments free from harassment and discrimination” and a greater focus on hiring policies and hiring practices.

Applicants were reminded that the project could not consist of projects or activities that

• restrict access to programs, services, or employment, or otherwise discriminate, contrary to applicable laws, on the basis of prohibited grounds, including sex, genetic characteristics, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, colour, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression

• advocate intolerance, discrimination and/or prejudice, or

• actively work to undermine or restrict a woman’s access to sexual and reproductive health services

Until applications are approved or rejected, it can be difficult to determine how the government interpreted its 2020 requirements.

As such, CCCC encourages its members who were not approved to contact us so that we can ascertain why they were denied funding and whether further action is necessary.
