And it seems you agree. The most frequent search term that brings people to my blog, sad to say,\u00a0is\u00a0some variant of &#8220;dysfunctional church board.&#8221; Yes, it is true.\u00a0\u00a0The single most viewed\u00a0post I&#8217;ve written\u00a0is <em><a title=\"The unique challenges of church boards\" href=\"\/news_blogs\/john\/2010\/03\/18\/the-unique-challenges-of-church-boards\/\" target=\"_blank\">The unique challenges of church boards<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For those interested in the top three search terms, the second most frequent is something like &#8220;private life\u00a0christian leader&#8221; which takes them to <em><a title=\"The private life of a Christian leader\" href=\"\/news_blogs\/john\/2009\/10\/23\/the-private-life-of-a-christian-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\">The private life of a Christian leader<\/a><\/em>. And the third most frequent search term is\u00a0usually worded as &#8220;how do\u00a0i\u00a0discern if i am called to ministry,&#8221; which brings people to my post <em><a title=\"Discerning your call\" href=\"\/news_blogs\/john\/2010\/03\/01\/discerning-your-call\/\" target=\"_blank\">Discerning your call<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you have a dysfunctional church board, there is hope. I gave a number of suggestions in that post, but now I have a new one. Last year I delivered the CCCC&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Serving as a Board Member <\/em>seminar in 14 cities across Canada, and then in November CCCC recorded it before\u00a0a live audience in a television studio. After that, my part was over and\u00a0while I was on sabbatical the CCCC staff took over the project to see it through to completion.\u00a0Now that I&#8217;m back in the office, I have watched the finished product, and I have to say I&#8217;m very pleased with it.\u00a0<a title=\"CCCC Store page for Serving as a Board Member\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/cart\/view_item\/dvd_board\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Serving as a Board Member <\/em>is available as a 2-<strong>DVD<\/strong> set <\/a>with a link to download and make as many participant workbooks\u00a0as you need. In a few weeks of sales CCCC has already sold 40% more than we budgeted for this DVD for the whole year. One denominational district office watched one copy and then bought 40 more copies to give to their churches! I hope and pray each church board is richly blessed by it. The\u00a0seminar\u00a0is\u00a0very practical and deals with the issues head-on.\u00a0It follows the lifecycle of a board member from the first approach to be a board candidate through to the final board meeting.\u00a0It has\u00a08 modules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Module 1 Readiness to Serve\n<ul>\n<li>the personal aspects of board service (~11 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 2 How Being a Director Affects You\n<ul>\n<li>duties of a director and protection from liability (~22 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 3 Know the Board&#8217;s Issues\n<ul>\n<li>how to get up to speed and special issues for church boards (~12 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 4 Special Aspects of Charity Leadership\n<ul>\n<li>everything you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>need<\/em><\/span> to know (and not a bit more!) about charity regulation (~18 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 5 Board Meetings\n<ul>\n<li>how they work and the &#8220;rules of the game&#8221; (~25 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 6 Governance\n<ul>\n<li>the principles of good governance and the questions you should be asking (~20 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 7 Board Deliberations\n<ul>\n<li>how to have honest, open debates and still all be friends (~15 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Module 8 Relationships and Coming Off the Board\n<ul>\n<li>New relationships with staff and church members, and letting go gracefully (~15 mins)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can easily use\u00a0the DVDs\u00a0for <strong>board development<\/strong>\u00a0showing a module at a time over several\u00a0board meetings.
