src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/CMCS1-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"cmcs1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>In this month&#8217;s bulletin,\u00a0we ran\u00a0an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/bulletin_article\/461\">article<\/a> highlighting one of the benefits of\u00a0membership with CCCC, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/compensation_survey\">Canadian Ministry Compensation Survey<\/a>\u00a0(CMCS). \u00a0While the tool itself is not new, it remains highly relevant by providing <strong>Christian charities<\/strong> with <strong>salary<\/strong> and <strong>benefits\u00a0<\/strong>data that helps\u00a0them to make better decisions about staff member <strong>pay<\/strong>. \u00a0If your charity is not already using this tool, I highly encourage you to try it out.<\/p>\n<p>One of the great things about the CMCS is that charities can typically enter their information, and begin running reports in a matter of 10-15 minutes. \u00a0The survey is <strong>free<\/strong>\u00a0to CCCC members, and can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/cart\/view_item\/code_compensation\">purchased<\/a> by non-members for $200. \u00a0In order to access the reports, charities must first designate an <strong>administrator<\/strong> who will enter their\u00a0ministry&#8217;s\u00a0compensation information into the tool.<\/p>\n<p>The CMCS provides data on ministry positions (e.g. music\/worship pastors, missionaries etc.) that are not typically captured in secular offerings and allows results to be filtered in many different ways (e.g. ministry type, position, revenue etc.) including whether the position engages in <strong>deputized fundraising<\/strong> or is eligible for <strong>clergy residence deduction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While the CMCS is certainly a great tool, there may be times when charities wish to compliment these reports\u00a0with data collected from other sources. \u00a0In this blog post I will highlight a number of\u00a0free and low cost resources that charities should be aware of\u00a0when researching <strong>market data<\/strong> for specific types of ministry positions.<\/p>\n<h2>Free compensation\u00a0information<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.linkedin.com\/2016\/11\/02\/introducing-linkedin-salary-unlock-your-earning-potential\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23911\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/LinkedInSalary-1.jpg?resize=150%2C50&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"linkedinsalary\" width=\"150\" height=\"50\" \/><\/a>When <strong>LinkedIn<\/strong> recently released its\u00a0new tool called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.linkedin.com\/2016\/11\/02\/introducing-linkedin-salary-unlock-your-earning-potential\">LinkedIn Salary<\/a>,\u00a0I had to try it. \u00a0I typed in my own job title and desired\u00a0city centre and was quickly rewarded with the median <strong>base salary<\/strong> and median total <strong>compensation<\/strong> for Human Resources Managers in the Toronto\u00a0area. \u00a0I was able to further filter results\u00a0based on years of experience, and view\u00a0additional insights about how location, industry and education each affect staff member pay.<\/p>\n<p>LinkedIn Salary is free to use, with\u00a0the only requirement being\u00a0that users must enter their own personal compensation details in order to make use of the tool. \u00a0While LinkedIn salary has the potential to be a tremendous asset to charities,\u00a0its recent release means that\u00a0participation by Christian organizations is fairly limited to date. \u00a0Subsequently,\u00a0the tool may not yet be able to provide compensation insights into ministry specific positions that Christian charities are looking for. \u00a0Having said that, if even\u00a0a fraction of LinkedIn users utilize this service, LinkedIn Salary could\u00a0end up being a very useful resource\u00a0for Christian charities in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.ca\/index.htm\">Glassdoor<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.ca\/index.htm\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23912\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Glassdoor-1.jpg?resize=150%2C45&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"glassdoor\" width=\"150\" height=\"45\" \/><\/a>\u00a0is probably best known for enabling\u00a0employees and job seekers to write\u00a0reviews about organizations, but it can\u00a0also be a valuable source of salary information. \u00a0While the salary information that <strong>Glassdoor<\/strong> provides\u00a0is oriented to the individual job seeker, it\u00a0can potentially be useful to charities as well.<\/p>\n<p>By clicking on the &#8216;salaries&#8217; tab, users are prompted to begin their search by selecting a job title and\u00a0location. \u00a0The results are organized into\u00a0what\u00a0Glassdoor calls <strong>Salary Reports<\/strong>, and\u00a0is based on information provided by individuals using the service. \u00a0Due to its job seeker orientation, the results are really more of a series of data points as opposed to\u00a0a report that interprets\u00a0trends and themes in staff member pay. \u00a0Each Salary Report typically includes the salary for the job title and region that was selected. \u00a0It also contains information on <strong>bonuses<\/strong>, the size of the organization and the number of years of experience possessed by that particular\u00a0incumbent.<\/p>\n<p>These Salary Reports\u00a0will likely be most\u00a0helpful to charities when searching for compensation data on non-ministry specific roles such as\u00a0Finance Director, IT Manager or Administrative Assistant. \u00a0The website also provides free access to blogs, webinars and ebooks that may be of assistance to charities.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0Paid compensation information<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.payscale.com\/research\/CA\/Country=Canada\/Salary\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23904\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Payscale.jpg?resize=150%2C64&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"payscale\" width=\"150\" height=\"64\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By creating a profile with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.payscale.com\/hr\">Payscale<\/a>, charities get to price one job for free before deciding\u00a0to commit to the paid version of the service. \u00a0I was able to create a profile in minutes, and decided to see what I could learn\u00a0about what Senior Pastors are paid in Waterloo, Ontario. \u00a0I was prompted to complete a number of <strong>compensable factors<\/strong> and was impressed\u00a0to see that <strong>Payscale<\/strong> actually had a <strong>job summary<\/strong> for that position.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>detailed market data report<\/strong> that I received provided information on <strong>base salary<\/strong>, <strong>total compensation<\/strong> and bonuses which can\u00a0be viewed as either a table or graph. \u00a0I liked that the results were displayed by <strong>percentile<\/strong>, which enables\u00a0charities to get very specific\u00a0about where they place staff members within a given pay range. \u00a0Payscale is a subscription based service, and\u00a0additional jobs can be priced for a fee. \u00a0This service may be particularly useful when researching more senior roles, or ones that require a unique or hard to find skill set.<\/p>\n<p>Like Glassdoor, Payscale\u00a0also provides free compensation resources\u00a0that include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.payscale.com\/compensation-today\">blog posts<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.payscale.com\/hr\/whitepapers\">whitepapers<\/a> that charities may find helpful.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/charityvillage.com\/cms\/knowledge-centre\/sector-reports\/2017-salary-report\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23905\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Charity-Village.jpg?resize=150%2C90&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"charity-village\" width=\"150\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>It has been a few years since their 2013 study, however <strong>Charity Village&#8217;s<\/strong> website indicates that a new release\u00a0will be available in January 2017. \u00a0This resource\u00a0focuses exclusively on charities and non-profits in Canada, and includes helpful\u00a0insights based on trends occurring in this sector. The 2013 compensation\u00a0survey had a sample size of\u00a0nearly 1,500 completed surveys, with about 2% of respondents indicating that their organization&#8217;s focus was &#8216;<strong>religion<\/strong>&#8216;. \u00a0It will be interesting to see if the 2017 survey reports an increased level of participation by faith based charities.<\/p>\n<p>Charity village&#8217;s salary and benefits study\u00a0provides\u00a0compensation data for six different staffing levels (e.g. Support Staff, Functional &amp; Program Staff etc.), which means that charities\u00a0will need to first map each of their roles to one of the staffing levels described in the survey\u00a0in order to find the data they are searching for.<\/p>\n<p>The salary and benefits data provided in this study can be filtered\u00a0based on many different criteria including jurisdiction, organizational focus, number of employees and revenue. \u00a0While\u00a0this study\u00a0is limited in providing data specific to faith based charities, it is a good all around choice when looking for compensation data in the Canadian charity sector.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptbaconsulting.com\/NonProfitSurvey.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-23906 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Boland-Survey-300x60.jpg?resize=300%2C60&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"boland-survey\" width=\"300\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Boland-Survey.jpg?resize=300%2C60&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Boland-Survey.jpg?w=705&amp;ssl=1 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>Boland Survey<\/strong> is an annual compensation survey, and reported that just over 400 respondents participated\u00a0in its 2015 study. \u00a0Five reports are available for purchase and are published by the following regions: British Columbia, Alberta, Prairies (Saskatchewan\/Manitoba), Ontario, and Atlantic. \u00a0It is important to note that only charities who participate in the survey\u00a0are eligible to buy the reports,\u00a0with reports being published each fall.<\/p>\n<p>The survey provides helpful insights into compensation trends (e.g. forecasting salary increases) and HR practices (e.g. vacation, flex time) as well as detailed salary tables for each position included in the survey. \u00a0The 2013 survey for Ontario included data specifically for the Greater Toronto Area which charities in that part of the province may find helpful. \u00a0The position of Pastoral Care Support\/Chaplain was recently added to the survey and\u00a0charities can request to have new roles included as well.<\/p>\n<p>Participation by charities who identified their organization type as &#8216;religion&#8217;
