The aim is the glory of God and the flourishing of our communities.&#8221; Charlie Self<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-18883-1' id='fnref-18883-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(18883)'>1<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This new series, <em>What does the church need?<\/em> will cover four action steps that the <strong>evangelical<\/strong> church needs to take in order to equip itself for better, more effective, participation in our contemporary Canadian culture.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This post covers the first step. We need to thoughtfully and prayerfully consider our positions on the social and political issues of our day.&nbsp;These issues, such as poverty, injustice, inequity, inequality, sexuality, community values, and so on, are complex. There are many ways of addressing these issues, most of which can be labelled as <strong>left\/liberal<\/strong> or <strong>right\/conservative<\/strong>, but the best, most viable and sustainable solutions are likely more nuanced than those black and white labels suggest.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evangelicals range from fundamentalists<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-18883-2' id='fnref-18883-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(18883)'>2<\/a><\/sup> on the conservative side to progressives on the liberal side.<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-18883-3' id='fnref-18883-3' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(18883)'>3<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Most evangelicals are in the middle. This means Christians\u00a0may have differing positions even when they are all within the evangelical camp. We need to understand why we&#8217;ve landed where we have, and be confident\u00a0that our positions can be justified on the basis that they glorify the Triune God and support the creation mandate and the church&#8217;s mission.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So with that in mind, let&#8217;s do a quick review of where evangelicals are on the various spectrums and why they are where they are.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why we see things differently\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q2Hqd59V16s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Political Left-Right<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some evangelicals (and virtually everyone else) are surprised that evangelicals don&#8217;t all <strong>vote<\/strong> for the same <strong>political<\/strong> party. Internally, we might even suspect the &#8220;evangelical credentials&#8221; of others if they don&#8217;t vote for the &#8216;correct&#8217; party. Well, here&#8217;s how evangelicals line up politically.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Canadian evangelicals have historically supported all the major political parties in the same proportion as the general population. We don&#8217;t vote in a bloc as they tend to do in the States. However, over the last twenty years, Canadian evangelical support for the Liberal party has declined relative to the rest of the population, with the former Liberal voters moving to the Conservatives, NDP, and Green parties due to <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/files.efc-canada.net\/min\/rc\/cft\/V02I03\/Evangelical_Voting_Trends_1996-2008.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a long pattern of anti-evangelical pronouncements<\/a> from the Liberal party leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the last federal election, Canadian evangelicals did vote as a bloc&nbsp;for the Conservatives, but that was probably because the only other major party leader with a chance of forming a government, the NDP leader,&nbsp;said that evangelicals are <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.torontosun.com\/2013\/02\/11\/evangelicals-are-un-canadian-ndp-leader-thomas-mulcair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unCanadian<\/a>. It&#8217;s anybody&#8217;s guess whether this voting pattern will continue or whether evangelicals will revert to their previous patterns.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnstackhouse.com\/post\/evangelicals-and-the-canadian-election\">There is no single party that an evangelical can vote for<\/a> in good conscience that the party will fully align with&nbsp;a Christian perspective. So we muddle along and vote according to whichever of many Christian considerations is most important to us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If social morality were the main priority, then in former times one could vote Conservative.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If social justice had highest priority, then one could vote NDP or Liberal.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, with the various parties&#8217; platforms more recently, this is no longer the case. It really leaves evangelicals in a quandary because every party has its significant downside. One option that most evangelicals do not support in a meaningful way is a Christian party. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_Heritage_Party_of_Canada\">one<\/a> in Canada, but it only got 15,000 votes in the 2015 election (down from&nbsp;26,000 votes in the 2008 election).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">S<span style=\"line-height: 1.71429; font-size: 1rem;\">trategically, a Christian party is problematic because what&#8217;s good for the goose is good for the gander, and would we ever want to have a party representing another religion form the government? We certainly wouldn&#8217;t feel we were represented in such a government or that they had our interests at heart. Non-Christians would feel the same way about a Christian party winning an election. The better way is for evangelicals to take part in the existing political parties. It&#8217;s interesting to note that all three major political parties in Canada have evangelical MPs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moral Liberalism-Conservatism<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Richard Beck, in his book <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/product\/160899242X\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=15121&amp;creative=330641&amp;creativeASIN=160899242X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwccccorg-20\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Unclean<\/em><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-ca.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwccccorg-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=15&amp;a=160899242X\" alt=\"\">,\u00a0reports some research<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-18883-4' id='fnref-18883-4' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(18883)'>4<\/a><\/sup> that explains the differences between social liberals and conservatives (whether religious or not) in terms of <strong>moral<\/strong> foundations, which I think could help us better understand each other and even our own positions. A moral foundation is the basis on which we decide whether something is right or wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are five moral foundations in this model:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Harm\/Care: Harming others and failure to care, nurture, or protect make an act &#8216;wrong.&#8217; Virtues include kindness, care taking, and compassion.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fairness\/Reciprocity: Inequality or failure to reciprocate make an act wrong. Virtues include sharing, egalitarianism, and justice.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ingroup\/Loyalty: Failure to support, defend, or aid the group is wrong. Virtues include loyalty, patriotism, and cooperation.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Authority\/Respect: Failure to respect culturally significant groups, institutions, or authority figures Is wrong. Virtues include&nbsp;respect, duty, and obedience.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Purity\/Sanctity: Anything that demeans, debases, or profanes human or religious dignity or sacredness Is wrong. Virtues include purity, dignity, and holiness.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The key difference between the left and the right is that liberals on the left make their judgments based on the first two moral foundations, while those on the right, the conservatives, use all five categories to make their moral judgments. So conservatives will be offended by many more things than the liberals are. Both are offended when the first two moral foundations are transgressed, but only the conservatives will likely be offended when the other three moral foundations are crossed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Beck refers to Jesus&#8217; conflict with the Pharisees in Matthew 9 and draws attention to Jesus&#8217; quotation from Hosea 6:6,&nbsp;&#8220;<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mat+9:13&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I desire mercy, not sacrifice<\/a>.&#8221; Beck aligns mercy (by studying Hosea and the Minor Prophets) with the first two moral foundations and sacrifice with the 5th foundation &#8211; Purity\/Sanctity. While he states, &#8220;Let me be clear that I&#8217;m not co-opting or identifying Jesus with liberal positions in the <i>contemporary<\/i> culture wars&#8221;, he does identify Jesus as a liberal in the context of the issues of his day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The main conflict between liberals and conservatives is the priority, if any, given to the purity\/sanctity moral foundation. Liberals are not nearly as concerned about this foundation as the conservatives are.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I find it very significant that the purity\/sanctity foundation is not just divine in nature, but includes human dignity as well. You don&#8217;t have to be religious to use this as a moral foundation, you just need to be concerned about people&nbsp;being debased or demeaned. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But in addition to the human dimension, all evangelicals have a high view of humanity because of our faith, and have difficulty with anything that demeans human dignity and treats a person as anything less than God&#8217;s design and intent for the human person. The difference between morally liberal and conservative evangelicals is the relative priority given to this dimension.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In short, conservatives are concerned about anything that diminishes what it is to be human, while liberals are more concerned about anything that creates inequality between humans.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-thumbnail\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Why-We-See-Things-Differently.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21333 noreferrer noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Why-We-See-Things-Differently-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34841\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Why-We-See-Things-Differently.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Why-We-See-Things-Differently.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Why-We-See-Things-Differently.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Download discussion guide<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Diversity within Evangelicalism<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">James Davison Hunter, in his book <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/product\/0199730806\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=15121&amp;creative=330641&amp;creativeASIN=0199730806&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwccccorg-20\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>To Change the World<\/em><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-ca.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=wwwccccorg-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=15&amp;a=0199730806\" alt=\"\">, sees three main branches of political, social, and theological thought in the evangelical branch of Christianity, and names them as Conservative, Progressive, and Neo-Anabaptist. I&#8217;m focusing on the conservative and progressive (liberal) wings in this post.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hunter says that evangelical conservatives believe the main challenge in the world today is secularity, and that the solution is to &#8216;resacralize&#8221; our society (akin to Beck&#8217;s Purity\/Sanctity moral foundation). This means bringing God back into all parts of our social activity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evangelical progressives look at the same world and believe&nbsp;the main challenge is inequality due to disparities of wealth and power, which can be summarized as <i>justice<\/i> (akin to Beck&#8217;s first two moral foundations). The progressive solution to this challenge is a redistribution of wealth and power with a preference for the poor and needy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hunter says that both conservatives and liberals have identified important parts of the problems we face and their solutions are, in part, correct. His conclusion, though, is that both parties are mistaken in thinking that what they perceive as the main challenge is the defining one that trumps all others.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Evangelical Right<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Socially conservative Christians have high ideals for life and family. They see these two concepts&nbsp;as foundational to human flourishing. Their goal isn&#8217;t to force Christianity on anyone, but they do want a society that aligns with a high view of life and family.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unfortunately, life and family&nbsp;are both under sustained attack. Life is being challenged at both ends &#8211; abortion and euthanasia. Family is being challenged in many ways through all the issues related to monogamy, sexuality, the state increasingly taking on the parents&#8217; role through the school system, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The family is so highly valued because it is at the core of human society. It is the basic social unit that provides the healthiest environment for raising a new generation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Evangelical Left<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Socially progressive evangelicals place the highest emphasis on God&#8217;s justice, which means equity (fairness) defined in terms of the freedom of individuals and communities from poverty caused by domination and exploitation by the powerful and wealthy. I should note that evangelical social progressives are quite different from their secular counterparts, who are also interested in equity, but they define it in terms of individual autonomy and freedom to choose one&#8217;s own lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Evangelical progressives are working hard to realize the justice, peace, fairness, and community of God&#8217;s kingdom  that is realized<i>&nbsp;<\/i>when God <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Rev+21:1-4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">moves in and lives with humanity<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The goal is not to be liberal or conservative, left or right, but to be faithful representatives of Jesus Christ, and through our engagement with the world, to bring glory to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and help the church accomplish its mission, bringing God&#8217;s love to all humanity and bringing people into relationship with Jesus Christ.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I&#8217;m hoping this post will help people across the spectrum better understand why they hold their positions, but also see there is value in other perspectives. It would be great if a better understanding of all positions could lead to more complete, more robust positions on the issues of the day. Let&#8217;s apply the very&nbsp;best available research and biblical-theological reflection to develop a Christian position that defies categorization in conventional political or social labels.
